Chery plans to invest 400 million euros to build a factory in Spain.

Following BYD, another Chinese automotive company making its mark in Europe is Chery Automobile.

On April 19th, local time, Chery Automobile signed an agreement with Spanish automotive company Ebro-EV Motors to establish a joint venture in Barcelona, Spain for producing new electric vehicles.

According to the agreement, Chery Automobile will commence production of models like the Eu-Mengda in the third and fourth quarters of this year, with an estimated annual production volume of 50,000 vehicles by 2027, increasing to 150,000 vehicles by 2029.

Overseas media reports have revealed some details of the collaboration between Chery and Ebro-EV Motors. The total investment for this project amounts to 400 million euros (approximately 3 billion RMB), which includes investments from both partners as well as support from the Spanish government and the Catalonia regional government.

Chery’s collaboration with Ebro-EV Motors will reactivate the former Nissan automotive plant site in the Catalonia region. One factory at this production base will produce vehicles under the Chery Omoda brand, while another factory will produce models under the Ebro brand.

Following the agreement with Ebro-EV Motors, the Vice President and General Manager of Chery Automobile International expressed that Spain will become one of Chery’s key global “automobile export bases,” aiming to export vehicles to other regions in Europe from the Barcelona factory.

Data shows that Spain is the second-largest automotive producer in Europe after Germany, with a production volume of nearly 2.5 million vehicles last year, expected to reach around 2.3 million vehicles this year.
