Recently, Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, led by Chinese-American scientist and “AI mother” Fei-Fei Li, released the “2024 Artificial Intelligence Index Report.”
This 501-page report, described as the institute’s most comprehensive to date, tracks global trends in artificial intelligence development for 2023.
The report reveals that from 2021 to 2022, there was a significant 62.7% increase in global AI patent grants. Since 2010, the number of AI patents granted has grown more than 31 times.
In terms of AI patent quantity, China holds a commanding lead. In 2022, China accounted for 61.1% of global AI patent grants, surpassing the United States at 20.9%. Since 2010, the U.S. share of AI patents has continuously declined from 54.1%.
However, when it comes to top-tier AI models, the U.S. still leads over China, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. In 2023, 61 prominent AI models originated from U.S. institutions, far exceeding the EU’s 21 and China’s 15.
